विक्रम संवत जब प्रारंभ नहीं हुआ था तब युधिष्ठिर संवत, कलियुग संवत और सप्तर्षि संवत प्रचलित थे। सप्तर्षि संवत की शुरुआत 3076 ईसवी पूर्व हुई थी जबकि कलियुग संवत की शुरुआत 3102 ईसवी पूर्व हुई थी। इसी दौरान युधिष्ठिर संवत भी प्रारंभ हुआ था। सभी के संवत की शुरुआत चैत्र प्रतिप‍दा से ही होती थी| विक्रम संवत में वार, नक्षत्र और तिथियों का स्पष्‍टिकरण किया गया। इसमें पंचांग की बातों के साथ ही बृहस्पति वर्ष की गणना को भी शामिल किया गया।
